The New Liposuction: Plastic Surgeon Grant Stevens, M.D. Speaks Out About Coolsculpting
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Grant Stevens of Los Angeles, California discusses the benefits of coolsculpting with Randy Alvarez of The Wellness Hour. A must-see interview if you have unwanted fat on your arms, chest, back, abdomen or thighs.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared alternative to liposuction that uses Cryolipolysis™ fat-freezing technology to safely and effectively kill unwanted fat cells. No anesthetic is needed, and no incisions need to be made. You will be ready to return to your regular routine right after treatment. With targeted cooling, your fat is safely chilled to damage the fat cells without harming surrounding skin or tissue. During the weeks following your procedure, your body will naturally eliminate the damaged fat cells, leaving you looking slimmer. Find out three surprising benefits to putting fat on ice with CoolSculpting.
How does CoolSculpting work?
When you come in for your CoolSculpting treatment, we will place a protective gel over the treatment area. Once you are comfortable, the CoolSculpting device will use a combination of gentle vacuum pressure and deep cooling to treat the fat below the skin and freeze unwanted fat cells.Patients can usually sit comfortably while the device works, often reading a book, watching a movie or surfing the Web. As a result of the cooling, you may feel some numbness during treatment, and the treatment area may be red afterward, but this usually fades within a few hours. Most treatments take about one hour per treatment area. Unlike most other practices in Southern California, The Stevens Institute has 9 CoolSculpting machines, so you can get the same results in a fraction of the time. CoolSculpting can treat the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms, back, flanks, “love handles,” and a “muffin top.”
What results can I expect from CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is ideal for smaller pockets of fat that are diet- and exercise-resistant. It can effectively remove 20 to 30% of the fat in the treatment area. However, CoolSculpting typically cannot treat larger areas as effectively as traditional Los Angeles tumescent liposuction can. Results appear gradually during the weeks following the procedure as your body uses its own natural waste-removal system to eliminate the damaged fat cells. Most patients benefit from multiple treatments spaced over a few months. Your surgeon will discuss with you the right number of treatments to meet your goals.
Who is a candidate for CoolSculpting?
Ideal candidates for CoolSculpting should be within 15 to 20 pounds of their ideal weight and should be otherwise healthy. The best candidates have small pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat that they want to remove. If your goal is to lose a great deal of weight, CoolSculpting may not be an option for you.
Is CoolSculpting safe?
CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared, proven safe and clinically effective. Millions of procedures have been performed in more than 70 countries around the world. There’s minimal risk due to its noninvasive nature. But, as with any medical procedure, please consult with your doctor for full details.
How long does a Coolsculpting treatment take?
The length of your treatment will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. While each treatment lasts about one hour, some patients have more than one treatment during the same office visit. Some practices even have multiple CoolSculpting systems and applicators, so it’s possible for a patient to have multiple areas treated at once.
What does a CoolSculpting treatment feel like?
As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you may typically feel intense cold. This soon dissipates. With some applicators, you’ll feel some pulling as suction is applied. The area generally goes numb within five to 10 minutes during treatment. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop or even take a nap during their treatment.
What are the most popular places on your body to get CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared to be used on some of the most common problem areas: the double chin, inner and outer thighs, the abdomen, love handles, bra fat, back fat and underneath the buttocks (also known as the banana roll).
How long do the results from CoolSculpting last?
The treated fat cells, once eliminated from the body, are gone for good. Your doctor will help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals.
