In most cases, procedures can be completed in a single visit, and you’ll leave the office with a beautiful smile.Dental implants are the best treatment for one or more missing teeth — but before you move forward with dental implant treatment, it’s important to understand if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. To find out if dental implants are right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Joseph Field. Not every patient looking to treat their missing teeth is a good candidate for dental implants from the start, and it is only through this consultation that you can determine what could be preventing you from moving forward with the treatment you need.

What Makes an Ideal Implant Candidate?

There are certain standards of oral health that you must be able to meet before you will be allowed to move forward with the dental implant process. The reason for this is the fact that your oral structures must be healthy enough for the process of osseointegration to succeed. It is largely thanks to osseointegration that dental implants are able to provide the benefits they do, so it’s important that this process succeeds. Some of the traits that make up an ideal dental implant candidate include:One or More Missing Teeth: As amazing as dental implants are, we have no intention of replacing perfectly healthy teeth with implants that are unneeded.Good Oral Health: Your mouth must be clear of conditions such as gum disease or tooth decay, as they can interfere with the bonding process.Jaw Structure and Gum Density: Both your jawbone and gums must be healthy enough to support dental implants. An Understanding of the Implant Process: Dental implants are not an instant solution to missing teeth. This process can take months to complete, but will leave you with the best possible replacement teeth in return for your time. Many patients do not completely qualify for dental implant treatment when they first go in to see Dr. Field. However, these patients may be given the opportunity to move forward with this treatment; sometimes they simply need a supplemental treatment before they're able to receive their implants. Whether or not you will need a supplemental procedure will be determined during your consultation.

Less Ideal Candidates for Dental Implants

Some people are kept from implant treatment because of a condition or habit they have. Some examples of this are:Smokers: Smoking can have horrible effects on your oral health. Not only can it affect the look of your teeth, but it can also result in dangerous oral conditions that can result in your implant’s failure.Alcoholics: Patients who consume large amounts of alcohol may also be unable to move forward with the dental implant process. The reason for this is the fact that alcohol can affect your body’s ability to heal itself, which can put your implant at risk for failure.Children: Younger patients may initially be denied treatment with dental implants because their jawbones may be in a state of change that can make it much more difficult to properly plan out their dental implant treatment. For this reason, Dr. Field will not provide dental implants for our younger patients until this jawbone growth has finished.Pregnant Women: As a rule of thumb, women who are pregnant are advised against pursuing any form of treatment requiring surgery. For this reason, they are usually asked to wait until after their child is born before Dr. Field will allow you to move forward with the dental implant process.
